Here are 4 top destinations and 8 restaurant recommendations for your next business flight layover

One of the great advantages of business flight layovers for hard working crews and their Clients is dining out in different cities as they fly around Europe.  We often hear from Clients and crew about their favourite cities and the restaurants they like to visit whenever they get a chance, so in today’s blog we’d like to share a few of those with you.  Perhaps on your next layover it will give you something to look forward to as well!

Among those who comment, we often hear about four cities in Europe that seem to be favoured by those who travel a lot.  There are obviously many great destinations, but for us (and to keep this article shorter than a Tom Clancy novel), cities that seem to come up a lot are London, Nice, Athens and Rome.

Clearly all offer history, culture, legends and myths to consider and explore when one has a little time to do so, such as when “forced” to endure a layover.  In all situations you’ve got to eat, right?  So why not choose some really great spots and make the best of things.  There are so many great restaurants in each city, but in keeping with a reasonable blog length, here are 2 per location that we hear about a lot. Enjoy!

London:

Hakassan at Mayfair

Known globally as a leading destination for modern Cantonese cuisine the Mayfair location is on two floors offering traditional seating or a more relaxed dining/bar area.  This Michelin Star location features specialty items unique to Mayfair including Black Truffle Roast Duck and Steamed New Zealand Mini Lobster.

Barrafina

With three locations in London, Barrafina is a great choice for an authentic Spanish tapas experience. Variety is the driving force here where you can sit at the marble topped bar and watch the chefs prepare their magic.  The a la carte menu showcases authentic regional dishes and each location has its own unique daily specials menu.

Nice:

Boccaccio

Located on the French Riviera, Boccaccio is a celebration of the culture and vision of Gino Cannatella.  A boy who travels from Sicily to Naples and finally France where his culinary skill, the taste of the sea and the love for fish combine to create this favourite dining spot.  Enjoy dishes such as Blue Lobster Claws and the Bouillabaisse Plate.

Comptoir du Marchē

Located in the old town, this spot gets rave reviews from all who visit.  The staff are known for being polite and helpful to non French speaking visitors and the menu includes tasty items such as Foie Gras with Pineapple Chutney and Scallops with Bacon.

Athens:

Spondi

If fresh, authentic and elegance are words you like to hear from a restaurant, then this might just be the place for you.  This beautiful, award winning restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating with an inspired menu that leaves guests raving.  Feature dishes include Prawns with Russian Caviar and Milk Fed Lamb with Eggplant, Black Olives and Oregano juice.

Varoulko

This elegant spot offers fantastic views from its seaside location for guests to sip and enjoy. Authentic Greek cuisine is at the center of the selective and creative menu which includes signature dishes such as Desalted Dry Cod with Traditional Garlic Dip and fresh, Steamed Monkfish.

Rome:

Altrove

Altrove is a unique concept backed by a non-profit organization that focuses on training and education for youth. It serves as a training ground for young staff who come from all over the world to follow their gastronomic dreams.  Altrove offers quality, healthy and ethically based menu choices inspired by Mediterranean and Middle Eastern palates.

Cacio e Pepe

If you enjoy the ambience of an intimate, rustic trattoria, Cacio e Pepe delivers. Named for the traditional pasta dish and once featured by Anthony Bourdain on television, this is the real deal when it comes to an authentic, Italian food experience. This is an unassuming neighborhood style spot where you can enjoy great wines and outstanding pasta.

So, enjoy those layovers and Bon Appetit!
